שתי הסדרות מהוכחת המשפט: [math]\displaystyle{ a_n=\left(1+\frac1n\right)^n }[/math] (הנקודות המלאות) עולה, ו־[math]\displaystyle{ b_n=\left(1+\frac1n\right)^{n+1} }[/math] (הנקודות החלולות) יורדת.
נסמן [math]\displaystyle{ a_n=\left(1+\frac1n\right)^n }[/math]; לפי ההגדרה [math]\displaystyle{ a_n\to e }[/math].
(ב) [math]\displaystyle{ \left(1+\frac1{n+1}\right)^n=\frac{a_{n+1}}{1+\frac1{n+1}} }[/math].
2: [math]\displaystyle{ \left(1-\frac1n\right)^n\to\frac1e }[/math]
חשבו את [math]\displaystyle{ \lim\left(1-\frac1n\right)^n }[/math], והסיקו את [math]\displaystyle{ \lim\left(1-\frac1{n^2}\right)^n }[/math].
נסמן [math]\displaystyle{ a_n=\left(1+\frac1n\right)^n }[/math] וננסה להגיע לצורה הזו. לכל [math]\displaystyle{ n\ge2 }[/math] מתקיים [math]\displaystyle{ 1-\frac1n=\frac{n-1}n }[/math], ולכן [math]\displaystyle{ \left(1-\frac1n\right)^n=\frac1{\left(\frac n{n-1}\right)^n} }[/math] [math]\displaystyle{ =\frac1{\left(1+\frac1{n-1}\right)^n} }[/math].
נפרק את המכנה: [math]\displaystyle{ \left(1+\frac1{n-1}\right)^n=c_n\cdot\left(1+\frac1{n-1}\right) }[/math], כאשר [math]\displaystyle{ c_n=\left(1+\frac1{n-1}\right)^{n-1} }[/math] לכל [math]\displaystyle{ n\ge2 }[/math] (מותר שסדרה לא תהיה מוגדרת במספר סופי של מקומות).
[math]\displaystyle{ c_{n+1}=\left(1+\frac1n\right)^n=a_n }[/math] ו־[math]\displaystyle{ a_n\to e }[/math], ולכן לפי משפט 2.1.15 גם [math]\displaystyle{ c_n\to e }[/math]: זו אותה סדרה, מוזזת במקום אחד. בנוסף [math]\displaystyle{ 1+\frac1{n-1}\to1 }[/math].
לפי אריתמטיקה של גבולות המכנה שואף ל־[math]\displaystyle{ e\cdot1=e\ne0 }[/math], ולכן [math]\displaystyle{ \left(1-\frac1n\right)^n\to\frac1e }[/math].
חשבו את הגבולות, והשוו ל־[math]\displaystyle{ \left(1+\frac1n\right)^n\to e }[/math]: (א) [math]\displaystyle{ \left(1+\frac1{n^2}\right)^n }[/math] (ב) [math]\displaystyle{ \left(1+\frac1n\right)^{n^2} }[/math]
נסמן [math]\displaystyle{ a_m=\left(1+\frac1m\right)^m }[/math]. הסדרה [math]\displaystyle{ a_m }[/math] עולה ושואפת ל־[math]\displaystyle{ e }[/math], ולכן [math]\displaystyle{ e }[/math] הוא החסם העליון של איבריה (כך בסרטון, 5:09); בפרט [math]\displaystyle{ a_m\le e }[/math] לכל [math]\displaystyle{ m\in\mathbb N }[/math]. (הוכחה ישירה: אילו היה [math]\displaystyle{ a_m>e }[/math] עבור [math]\displaystyle{ m }[/math] כלשהו, אז לכל [math]\displaystyle{ n\ge m }[/math] היה [math]\displaystyle{ a_n-e\ge a_m-e }[/math], כלומר אף איבר מהמקום [math]\displaystyle{ m }[/math] והלאה אינו בסביבה של [math]\displaystyle{ e }[/math] ברדיוס [math]\displaystyle{ \varepsilon=a_m-e>0 }[/math], בסתירה ל־[math]\displaystyle{ a_n\to e }[/math].)
(א) חסם מלמטה: [math]\displaystyle{ 1+\frac1{n^2}>1 }[/math], ולכן [math]\displaystyle{ \left(1+\frac1{n^2}\right)^n>1 }[/math] לכל [math]\displaystyle{ n\in\mathbb N }[/math].
חסם מלמעלה: נעלה בחזקת [math]\displaystyle{ n }[/math] ונשתמש ב־[math]\displaystyle{ a_m\le e }[/math] עם [math]\displaystyle{ m=n^2 }[/math]: [math]\displaystyle{ \left[\left(1+\frac1{n^2}\right)^n\right]^n=\left(1+\frac1{n^2}\right)^{n^2} }[/math] [math]\displaystyle{ =a_{n^2}\le e }[/math]. נוציא שורש [math]\displaystyle{ n }[/math]־י (שומר על אי־שוויון בין מספרים חיוביים): [math]\displaystyle{ \left(1+\frac1{n^2}\right)^n\le\sqrt[n]e=e^{\frac1n} }[/math].
לפי טענה 2.8.1(א) ([math]\displaystyle{ e>0 }[/math] ו־[math]\displaystyle{ \frac1n\to0 }[/math]) מתקיים [math]\displaystyle{ e^{\frac1n}\to e^0=1 }[/math]. לכל [math]\displaystyle{ n\in\mathbb N }[/math] מתקיים [math]\displaystyle{ 1\le\left(1+\frac1{n^2}\right)^n\le e^{\frac1n} }[/math], ושתי הסדרות החוסמות שואפות ל־[math]\displaystyle{ 1 }[/math], ולכן לפי משפט הסנדביץ' [math]\displaystyle{ \left(1+\frac1{n^2}\right)^n\to1 }[/math].
(ב) [math]\displaystyle{ \left(1+\frac1n\right)^{n^2}=\left[\left(1+\frac1n\right)^n\right]^n }[/math] [math]\displaystyle{ =(a_n)^n }[/math]. מתקיים [math]\displaystyle{ a_n>0 }[/math] לכל [math]\displaystyle{ n\in\mathbb N }[/math] ו־[math]\displaystyle{ a_n\to e>1 }[/math] (כי [math]\displaystyle{ e>2 }[/math]), ולכן לפי משפט 2.6.1(א) [math]\displaystyle{ (a_n)^n\to\infty }[/math].

דוגמה 4: שאלה ממבחן: החסם העליון של [math]\displaystyle{ \left(1+\frac{(-1)^{n+1}}n\right)^n }[/math]
תהי [math]\displaystyle{ A=\left\{\left(1+\frac{(-1)^{n+1}}n\right)^n:n\in\mathbb N\right\} }[/math]. מצאו את [math]\displaystyle{ \sup A }[/math] והוכיחו.
נסמן [math]\displaystyle{ a_n=\left(1+\frac1n\right)^n }[/math] ונפריד לפי הזוגיות של [math]\displaystyle{ n }[/math]. עבור [math]\displaystyle{ n }[/math] אי־זוגי [math]\displaystyle{ (-1)^{n+1}=1 }[/math], והאיבר הוא [math]\displaystyle{ a_n }[/math]. עבור [math]\displaystyle{ n }[/math] זוגי [math]\displaystyle{ (-1)^{n+1}=-1 }[/math], והאיבר הוא [math]\displaystyle{ \left(1-\frac1n\right)^n }[/math].
[math]\displaystyle{ e }[/math] חסם מלעיל של [math]\displaystyle{ A }[/math]. בנוסף [math]\displaystyle{ a_n\le e }[/math] לכל [math]\displaystyle{ n }[/math] (דוגמה 3), ולכן [math]\displaystyle{ a_n<a_{n+1}\le e }[/math] לכל [math]\displaystyle{ n\in\mathbb N }[/math]. עבור [math]\displaystyle{ n }[/math] זוגי [math]\displaystyle{ 0<1-\frac1n<1 }[/math], ולכן [math]\displaystyle{ \left(1-\frac1n\right)^n<1<e }[/math]. לכן [math]\displaystyle{ x<e }[/math] לכל [math]\displaystyle{ x\in A }[/math].
כיוון ש [math]\displaystyle{ a_n\to e }[/math], קיים [math]\displaystyle{ K\in\mathbb N }[/math] כך שלכל [math]\displaystyle{ n>K }[/math] מתקיים [math]\displaystyle{ |a_n-e|<\varepsilon }[/math]. המקום [math]\displaystyle{ n=2K+1 }[/math] אי־זוגי וגדול מ־[math]\displaystyle{ K }[/math], ולכן [math]\displaystyle{ a_{2K+1}\in A }[/math] ו־[math]\displaystyle{ a_{2K+1}>e-\varepsilon }[/math].
ל־[math]\displaystyle{ A }[/math] אין מקסימום: לפי טענה 1.1.5 מקסימום היה שווה לחסם העליון [math]\displaystyle{ e }[/math], אבל כל איברי [math]\displaystyle{ A }[/math] קטנים ממש מ־[math]\displaystyle{ e }[/math], כלומר [math]\displaystyle{ e\notin A }[/math].
"[math]\displaystyle{ 1^\infty=1 }[/math]": הבסיס [math]\displaystyle{ 1+\frac1n }[/math] שואף ל־[math]\displaystyle{ 1 }[/math], אבל [math]\displaystyle{ \left(1+\frac1n\right)^n\ne1^n }[/math], כי הבסיס משתנה יחד עם המעריך; הגבול הוא [math]\displaystyle{ e }[/math], ובדוגמה 3 אותה "צורה" נותנת גם [math]\displaystyle{ 1 }[/math] וגם [math]\displaystyle{ \infty }[/math].
להחליף רק את הבסיס בגבולו ולהשאיר את המעריך, למשל [math]\displaystyle{ \left(1+\frac1n\right)^{n^2}=\left[\left(1+\frac1n\right)^n\right]^n\to e^n }[/math]: גבול אינו יכול להיות תלוי ב־[math]\displaystyle{ n }[/math], וכאן הגבול הוא [math]\displaystyle{ \infty }[/math] (משפט 2.6.1).
להסיק ש [math]\displaystyle{ a_n=\left(1+\frac1n\right)^n }[/math] חסומה רק מכך ש [math]\displaystyle{ a_n<b_n }[/math]: גם [math]\displaystyle{ b_n }[/math] תלויה ב־[math]\displaystyle{ n }[/math], והחסם הקבוע [math]\displaystyle{ a_n<b_n\le b_1=4 }[/math] נובע מכך ש [math]\displaystyle{ b_n }[/math]יורדת (בסרטון, 4:07–4:19).
